Canada Makes Strong Effort in World Rugby Classic Plate Semi-Finals

Based in Vancouver, Canada, Derek Townsend is a principal with Citifund Capital Corporation, where he brokers commercial financing. A longtime rugby competitor who presently directs the Meraloma Athletic Club, Derek Townsend represented his country as a member of the Canadian team that participated in the recent World Rugby Classic in Bermuda in November 2019.

Mr. Townsend scored in a nail-biting, opening game in which Canada lost to Italy in a heartbreaking defeat. Subsequently, Canada gave its best effort in a plate semi-finals match against France.

This well-matched confrontation witnessed the teams draw even at 5-5 after a hard-fought first half, in which Canada could not convert on a pair of French yellow cards. Unfortunately, the second half was also a defensive grind that remained tied until late in the game, when a Canadian penalty allowed Yannick Lafforgue to score and give France an 8-5 win.

The rugby competition was only half the story for the Canadian team, which found a way to give back to the community by coaching and drilling aspiring Bermuda players at the Youth Rugby Development Camp.
